Why a sealed pack spoils produce

Fruit and vegetables carry on respiring after they are cut and packed. A film that seals completely traps the water they give off, the pack fogs, and the product sits in its own condensation until it goes soft.

Micro-perforation lets the water vapour out at roughly the rate the product produces it. The pack still looks sealed, still holds the product, and lasts longer on a shelf than the same product under an unperforated film.

Perforation is specified per product, not per film

The number and size of the holes is the whole specification, and it is different for a punnet of berries than for a head of lettuce. Too few holes and you have a sealed pack with extra steps; too many and the product dries out.

Send us the product, the pack format and how long it has to hold, and we will come back with a perforation pattern rather than a film. If you have a pack that works today, a sample of it is faster than any description.

Anti-fog is a separate decision

Anti-fog additive stops the fine condensation that makes a clear pack look grey. It costs a little more and it is what a retail buyer notices first. On a back-of-house pack that nobody looks at, it is money spent on nothing.
