Two real advantages

They nest. Sixty empty pressed pallets occupy the space of about twelve timber ones. For an operation that stores empties, or ships them out and gets nothing back, that is a warehouse-space saving and a return-freight saving at the same time.

They are ISPM 15 exempt. Processed wood is outside the scope of the standard, so an export shipment needs no heat treatment, no stamp and no certificate. For a first-time exporter that removes an entire category of border problem.

What you give up

They are not rated for racking, they do not take repeated forklift-tine abuse as well as timber, and they cost more per unit than a one-way timber pallet. If pallets stay in a warehouse and go on beams, timber is the right answer.

Weight

At 9 kg against 25 kg for an EPAL, the saving matters on air freight and on parcel-network palletised loads, where it comes straight off the chargeable weight.
