Bin liner

A plastic sack used to line a waste container. Specified by usable width and usable length in millimetres, not by the litre rating of the bin.

Also called: refuse sack, bin bag, waste sack, poly bag

The litre figure attached to a bin liner in catalogues describes the bin it suits, not the sack. Two suppliers’ “240 litre sacks” can differ by 100 mm in either direction.

The width-by-length convention in millimetres comes from EN 13592, which is worth reading for what it actually covers: sacks whose first use is household waste collection. It explicitly does not apply to sacks that line a bin and are not lifted when the bin is emptied — which is most wheeled-container liners. So the designation is a useful common language across the trade, and it is not a conformity claim for a commercial sack unless that specific sack has been tested against the standard for a use the standard covers.

Specify the size, the thickness in microns, the polymer and the seal type. See the bin liner size finder.
